Scholarship Opportunities

 

If you need financial support to teach Belize, the Ministry of Education offers a range of scholarships to attract the best trainees with strong academic backgrounds into the teaching profession. You could apply for a scholarship for an Associate Degree, based on your Caribbean Secondary Education Certificate (CSEC) subjects.  You may qualify for a full scholarship (tuition, fees and books) if you pursue an Associate Degree in Primary or Pre-Primary (Early Childhood) Education, or for a tuition scholarship (tuition fees only) for an Associate Degree in a subject area if you want to teach at a secondary school. A limited range of scholarships are also available for higher degrees, from the Bachelor of Education degree to a doctorate.

Eligibility

Associate Degree in Primary Education/Early Childhood Education
To be eligible for a full scholarship for an Associate Degree in Primary/Early Childhood Education, you will need:
Grades I – III in six (6) CSEC subjects, including English A and Mathematics

Other Associate Degree for teaching a subject at a secondary school
To be eligible for a tuition scholarship for an Associate Degree at institutions within Belize, you will need to earn:
Grades I – III in six (6) CSEC subjects, including English A and Mathematics

You are encouraged to obtain good grades in both English A and Mathematics at CSEC level in order to qualify for a Full or Tuition Scholarship at a national institution.

Make sure you have these documents before you apply

To support your application when required by a scholarship call you may need to have some or all of these documents ready:

  • Academic transcripts from secondary and post-secondary institutions in sealed envelopes from those institutions
  • Certified/Authenticated copies of degrees/diplomas and external exam results
  • Birth Certificate or Nationality Certificate (authenticated)
  • Personal statement signed by applicant
  • At least two sealed testimonials of personal character
  • A passport-sized photograph (affixed in the upper right corner of the application form)
  • Copy of passport data page (stamped by the Ministry of Immigration)
  • A medical report stamped and signed by a medical doctor (a pregnancy or drug test may be requested)

Authenticated academic documents and birth certificate may need to be apostilled (authentication as certified or notarized public documents) depending on the country of study.

Each year, the member institutions of the Association of Tertiary Level Institutions of Belize (ATLIB) award a scholarship to the most gifted student. The scholarship is for a Bachelor’s degree at the University of Belize.

The Belize Open Scholarship is for a Bachelor’s degree at the University of the West Indies based on CAPE level results. Applications are available at University of Belize and junior colleges through the Dean’s office. Completed applications must be submitted to the office of the Dean. The scholarship covers the cost of studies (tuition) and an allowance of up to BZ$200,000. The scholarship is for a three-year undergraduate degree course. The scholarship is advertised in June.

A single Scholarship in Pedagogy is available to Belizean Citizens who must first have completed Sixth Form/Junior College and be between the ages of 18 – 25 years. (Scholarships are also available in Medicine and Health Technology)

The scholarship is advertised in June each year.  Applicants must attend an interview.  If selected, the student is required to participate in orientation sessions. The scholarship covers cost of studies and a stipend. Classes begin in early September.

The Government of the United States of Mexico offers 20 scholarships to Belize each year.  The scholarships are advertised each June and are tenable at approximately 32 different universities all over Mexico which offer a wide range of subject areas.  These scholarships include Bachelor and Master’s levels of studies.  Students must apply and get acceptance from university of choice. The scholarships cover cost of studies and an allowance. Applicants must be at least 18 years old.

The student with the most outstanding results in the CAPE examinations is offered the opportunity to study on full scholarship for a Bachelor’s degree. You must maintain a GPA of 2.5 or more to continue to receive the scholarship.

The Belize National Teachers Union (BNTU) offers a tuition scholarship for any Bachelor of Education programme at the University of Belize. The scholarship is

The student must maintain a GPA of 2.5 or more.

Teachers who apply for the scholarship must have first received official study leave.

Application forms are available from the BNTU office.

The Ministry of the Public Service awards three Master’s degree scholarships and one for a Doctorate. You need to have work experience in the proposed study area plus prior acceptance at a Commonwealth university of your choice. The scholarship covers the cost of studies, airfare and an allowance.

This scholarship, offered in the field of Agriculture, is for a Bachelor’s degree for four to four-and-a-half years, depending on the chosen programme. You must have at least a high school diploma in the area of study. Two students are on scholarship in any given year.

Each grant-aided junior college selects a deserving student for a full scholarship for any Bachelor’s programme offered at the University of Belize.

The scholarship is awarded to a junior college (Sixth Form) student if you are a Belizean national, have an excellent academic record and demonstrate financial need. You must also have a track record of involvement in school or community activities.

To maintain the scholarship, you must earn a GPA of 2.5 or more.

A number of scholarships, covering the cost of studies and an allowance, are available for a Bachelor’s degree at the University of the West Indies and other Commonwealth universities and colleges.

To be eligible, you must hold an associate degree in the area of study, and you must first apply and get acceptance from the university. The scholarships are for a three-year undergraduate degree course.  The scholarships are advertised in June.

This scholarship is available on a three-year rotation is offered by Santa Clara University, a private Jesuit university located in Santa Clara, California. You must first apply and get accepted into any programme offered by Santa Clara University in order to apply for this scholarship. The scholarship is advertised in June.

To access the Second Year Tuition Scholarship, you need to register in the second year of your Associate Degree programme at University of Belize or any junior college.

In Year 2, semester I: Tuition is paid based on registration as a second year student.

In Year 2, semester II: Tuition is paid based on semester I academic results. You must have scored a GPA of 2.5 or higher.
